On 11 February, the Consulate-General of China in Sydney hosted the 2026 “Embracing the Chinese New Year” Spring Festival Reception. The Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly, the Hon. Greg Piper, MP, and the representative of the NSW Government, Mr Jason Yat-sen Li, MP, attended and delivered addresses. More than 500 guests were present, including representatives from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the NSW Parliament, local councils, as well as representatives from business, universities, culture, research, think tanks and media, members of the consular corps in Sydney, overseas Chinese communities, Chinese-funded institutions, and Chinese students.
H.E. Consul General Wang Yu noted that the Spring Festival carries the finest aspirations of the Chinese people. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of our two countries, China-Australia relations advance further for sound development, with frequent highlights. As the Year of the Horse approaches, we look forward to working hand in hand with all friends to advance China-Australia relations and embrace a brighter future together.
In their speeches, Piper and Li shared their impressions from visits to China, spoke highly of traditional Chinese culture and the achievements of Chinese modernisation, and expressed their willingness to advance Australia-China relations, strengthen subnational exchanges, and deliver benefits to the peoples of both sides.
The venue was festively decorated, and guests exchanged New Year greetings and renewed friendships in a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
