Consul General Hu Shan briefed local media on the Qinghai Yushu Earthquake

On 16 April, Consul General Hu Shan accepted the donation from ACPPRC to the earthquake-hit Yushu prefecture of Qinghai Province, and briefed ACPPRC leaders and journalists the current situation in Yushu area and the progress of rescue work.

Consul General Hu Shan said, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai Province, on April 14, causing serious casualties and loss of properties. The strong earthquake has left 760 people dead, 243 people missing, 11,477 injured and 15,000 civilian houses devastated, 100,000 homeless people in need of shelter.

He told them that Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao responed to the earthquake immediately and urged all-out efforts to save lives and provide assistance to people affected.They also called for efforts to step up aftershock monitoring and forecast, adopt precautionary measures, take good care of the people and safeguard social stability in the affected areas. The State Council promptly launched the level one national disaster response plan and set up a quake-relief headquarters. In order to participate in the relief work, President Hu Jintao postponed visits to Venezuela and Chile and Premier Wen Jiabao postponed a scheduled visit to Brunei, Indonesia and Myanmar. Premier Wen has rushed to the worst-affected areas to console families of the victims and coordinate relief efforts. The Chinese government has mobilized forces and resources extensively. Rescue workers and relief goods are pouring into the affected areas. The relief work is being carried out in a large scale and an orderly and effective fashion.

Consul General Hu Shan thanked the support and donation from the Chinese community in New South Wales and other walks of life, and stressed that with the concerted efforts by the Chinese people and support from international community, people in the disastrous area can overcome the disaster and rebuild a better life.
