Chinese FM Spokesperson: No One Would Care about Whether Those Politicians Calling for Boycott Come Or Not

2021-12-07 08:09

At a regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China on 6 December, spokesperson Zhao Lijian answered a question about the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Journalist: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison reportedly said the other day that Australia will consider boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics. What is China’s comment?

Zhao Lijian: We have said on multiple occasions that the Beijing Winter Olympics is a grand gathering of global winter sports athletes and fans, rather than a platform for certain politicians’ political stunts.

According to Olympic rules, dignitaries are invited by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) to attend the Olympic Games. It is up to the NOC to decide whether to send invitations or not.

The Olympic Charter explicitly stipulates that sports organizations within the Olympic Movement shall apply political neutrality, and opposes any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes. I noticed that Australian Olympic Committee President voiced that a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics will never achieve anything and he shared information on Australian athletes’ participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics.

We are 60 days away from the Beijing Winter Olympics today. To get themselves prepared, athletes from all countries have gone through much training and made strenuous efforts. The Winter Olympic Games, held every four years, is a precious opportunity for athletes to impress the world with their outstanding performance. It is athletes, instead of politicians clamoring for boycott, that should be in the spotlight. Politicians calling for boycott are doing so for their own political interests and posturing. In fact, no one would care about whether these people come or not, and it has no impact whatsoever on the Olympics to be successfully held by Beijing.
