Remarks by Consul General Gu at the Post Assumption Reception

(August 4th, 2016)

Distinguished guests,

Fellow Chinese compatriots,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening.

Thank you all for attending my reception. My wife and I hereby wish to extend a warm welcome to all of you.

China and Australia are both important countries in the Asian Pacific, and are building a comprehensive strategic partnership. President Xi Jinping paid a successful state visit to Australia in 2014, and since then cooperation between China and Australia has continued to deepen. We hope that both countries will make concerted efforts to keep strengthening communication and cooperation in all areas, properly handle each other's concerns, keep increasing our political mutual trust and common interests and ensure sound and stable development of the bilateral ties.

New South Wales, regarded by many as "the Premier State of Australia", has the longest history, the largest population and the most developed economy in Australia, and plays a leading role in Australia's development of its relationship with China. China has been for many years in a row the largest trading partner of New South Wales, which has attracted half of Chinese investment in Australia, 60% of inbound Chinese tourists and nearly 40% of international students from China. With the support of Premier Baird and friends from all sectors, the cooperation between New South Wales and China in all areas keeps deepening, and the situation is just gratifying.

There are more than 700,000 Chinese nationals and overseas Chinese in New South Wales. The Chinese communities made important contributions in promoting the economic growth and social development and enriching the diversified culture of Australia, and also in building a bridge of communication and cooperation between Australia and their native country. the Chinese Consulate General will continue to provide quality service for Chinese Community.

Distinguished guests, and dear friends,

I would like to stress two points with respect to China's economy and foreign policy.

Firstly, the Chinese Government is pressing ahead with structural reform, particularly supply-side structural reform, to ensure that the Chinese economy stay ahead among major economies with respect to growth rate, and positive results be achieved in economic restructuring and upgrading. China is confident and capable of maintaining medium to high economic growth, and continuing to create development opportunities for all countries including Australia. In a month time, China will host the G20 summit, the theme of which is Towards an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy. We hope this summit could give a new impetus to the world economy.

Secondly, China unswervingly pursues the path of peaceful development, adopts an opening up strategy featuring mutual benefit and win-win results, and upholds that disputes and differences between countries should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.

As the newly appointed Consul General of China in Sydney, I shall take as my solemn duty developing China - Australia relationship and China - New South Wales relationship, and stand ready to work with the New South Wales Government and friends from all sectors of the society to promote the cooperation for the benefit of peoples of China and Australia.

Thank you again for coming. Thank you all.
