Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang's Remarks on US State Department's Claim that Americans Tourists Might be Subject to Monitoring During the Beijing Olympic Games

2008-03-24 00:00

Q: It is reported that US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs released a "fact sheet" on March 20 for people plan to go to China during the Beijing Olympic Games, warning that all hotel rooms and offices in Beijing are considered to be subject to onsite or remote technical monitoring and the privacy of American travelers would not be protected. How do you comment on this?

A: No special security measures will be arranged beyond universally adopted international practice at public venues, hotels and offices in China. Foreign visitors can be assured that privacy in China will be guaranteed according to the law. It is irresponsible for the US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs to issue such a release.
