2011-05-06 07:23

On April 28, the newly-arrived Chinese Consul General Mr. Duan Jielong paid his first official call on Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO, Governor of New South Wales.

Mr. Duan thanked the Governor, a long-standing friend of the Chinese people, for her great efforts in promoting the friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia, especially in the field of education. He said the successful visit to Australia recently by CPPCC Chairman Jia Qinglin, and the upcoming 40th anniversary of the establishment of the sino-Australian diplomatic relationship represent further good opportunities for the development of the bilateral relationship. He assured the Governor of his commitment to work still closer with people from all walks of life in NSW to push forward the already strong relations between China and NSW.

Governor Bashir hailed the rapid development of China and noted that the exchanges between China and Australia have been deepening in fields across the board. Taking the education sector for example, she said, it's very exiting to see so many young Chinese students coming to study in Australia, and the number of Australians learning Chinese is also increasing, among whom is her own grand-daughter. She believed that the friendly exchanges between the young people will be serving as inexhaustible driving forces for the bilateral relationship. "I love China and Chinese people,"the Governor said, "and would love to see closer cooperation between Australia and China in various fields like education, science and technology, and food security, etc."

Deputy Consul General Ji Ningfeng was present at the meeting.
