Consul General Hu Shan Visits Gough Whitlam

On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China,Chinese Consul-General HU Shan visited Australia's former Prime Minister Mr. Gough Whitlam on 25 September 2009.

Mr. Hu expressed his cordial greetings to Mr. Whitlam on behalf of the Chinese Government and the Chinese people.He said it was Mr. Whitlam and Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Chou Enlai who jointly made the historic decision of establishing diplomatic relations between China and Australia 37 years ago, which had and would continue to benefit both countries and the peoples.

Mr. Hu stressed that the Chinese people would never forget Mr. Whitlam's historic achievements and would never forget an old friend. He wished Mr. Whitlam good health and longevity.

Mr. Whitlam thanked Mr. Hu for visiting him. He recalled his first visit to China when he met Mao Zedong and Chou Enlai. Mr. Whitlam pointed out that Australia as an Asia Pacific country should attach importance to developing friendly relations with Asia Pacific countries including China.

Mr. Whitlam said, he had witnessed through his numerous visits the great changes taken place in China, which should be attributed to the leadership of the Chinese Government.

Reporters from CCTV and Xinhua News Agency had a brief interview with Mr. Whitlam.
